There are only 3 things that can be flushed down the toilet and they are the 3 P’s - Pee, Poo and Paper.  Human waste and toilet paper are the ONLY things that should be flushed down the toilet. 

On the market in Australia today we have flushable wipes and flushable kitty litter.  Do not be fooled though, because these products are NOT to be disposed of in the toilet.  Only toilet paper has been designed to break down in your pipes.  On the list of things not to flush are:  Baby wipes/flushable wipes, cotton pads and makeup wipes, sanitary products and nappies, paper towels and tissues, medicines, kitty litter, cigarette butts, hair, dental floss and gum.

In Australia we use as little water as possible to flush our toilets as we are one of the driest continents on the planet, 4.5 litres per flush to be precise.  When you flush something not designed for the purpose, you are potentially causing blockages in your pipes.  These blockages could cost you a lot of money when a plumber comes to clear them.  There is no difference to what you can flush whether it’s a septic system or a sewerage system.

An alternative to toilet paper would be to install a bidet, which are water spigots for your nether regions. A popular style in modern homes is a bidet attachment, a sprayer with a nozzle feature that can be affixed to the toilet itself.  The benefits of a Bidet are no more clogged toilets, more hygienic and a transition away from paper.

When cleaning the toilet you should also try to avoid using bleach when possible and opt for a more non chemical cleaner avoiding potential damage to the porcelain surface of the toilet.
